A Gathering of the Tribes

Eve Packer

danny to be honest

i have nothing for you, no earth-
shattering shaking words, no metaphors

that turn the heavens bluer than blue,
i am now the person you turn from

in the street, you think, i will never be
old as she

and you remember oh yes you have a satchel
full of memories that leap up to greet you

now and then: how you run to the window
and witness the confetti cascading from

the bronx roofs and everyone dancing
on sherman ave, and you ask why

everyone is so happy, and your mother
says, the soldiers are coming home

and you are running up the stairs
in the london underground in your

anello and davide heels, your paco rabanne
purple/yellow huge plastic earrings

and you can run in those heels, you can
walk up the five and a half flights

to your apartment today, you have
lots of stories but who wants to hear

when you glance in the mirror
you see a horror flick, oh well

another day, and i'll let you in on a secret

every weekday for 4 hours
the texas oil heiress who lives

part-time down the block, opens
her windows so we passers-by

can peruse the small magnificent
black & red rothko on her wall

until, as jack, her extremely handsome
handy-man just tells me, they light the candles

let the window shades drop
