Jason Moran presents a set of solo piano music dedicated to Tribes. Moran is a pianist/composer and bandleader who mines a variety of musical styles to create adventurous, genre-crossing jazz performances. Born in Houston, Texas, Moran moved to New York at age 18 to study with Jaki Byard at Manhattan School of Music. Upon graduation, he landed a recording contract with Blue Note Records, and has since produced 8 critically acclaimed recordings, the most recent TEN. A 2010 MacArthur fellow, Moran has worked with many icons within jazz: Wayne Shorter, Charles Lloyd, Greg Osby, Cassandra Wilson, Dave Holland, Paul Motian and countless others. He also collaborates with many visual and performance artists including Joan Jonas, Kara Walker, Adrian Piper, Glenn Ligon and Adam Pendleton. Through reinterpretation of jazz standards and new compositions of his own, Moran is expanding the boundaries of jazz expression and playing a dynamic role in its evolution in the twenty-first century.
