Trevor Wilson and Vocal Ensemble release debut album Soft Wings.

Release concert to be held at Tribes Gallery in the East Village, March 24, 2012.

Trevor Wilson and Vocal Ensemble, a new vocal and guitar based Brooklyn group, is set to release their debut album, Soft Wings, on March 20, 2012. The group is led by 25-year-old composer Trevor Wilson, and includes Michael Chinworth, Jessica Green, Eliza McKelway, Will Stratton, and Alice Tolan-Mee. Since their inception in September 2011, they have performed at many NYC venues, including Northeast Kingdom, Bait and Tackle, Café Orwell, Sycamore, Big Snow, Paperswan, The Grand Victory, and Glasslands, among others. The ensemble will perform a set, after a set by Will Stratton and poetry reading by Eric Conroe, on March 24th, 2012, at Tribes Gallery (285 E 3rd St, NYC). The concert will begin at 9PM, with a $5 donation going to support Tribes Gallery.

Over the years, critics have struggled to place Wilson’s repertoire somewhere between carefree pop, conservative classical, and the complete absurd. The music defies category, yet remains relevant, sincere, and inspiring. In these works, Wilson’s Bossa Nova-inspired nylon guitar creates a mellow instrumental bed for a tangled web of vocal harmonies to dance upon. The work retains some quality of the DIY Brooklyn music scene from which Wilson et al emerge, yet seems almost better suited in an avant-garde theater space like LaMama or The Kitchen - a new wave in the emerging ‘indie classical’ scene.

Wilson currently assists Meredith Monk and has also more recently begun working with Tribes Gallery’s executive director Steve Cannon. All the members of this ensemble went to school at Bennington College, where their musical relationships began. The members of this ensemble are also close friends and collaborators with the members of Bobby, Horse’s Mouth, Alex Bleeker, and Mountain Man, who all share Bennington as their Alma Mater.

Soft Wings will be available to purchase digitally at trevorwilson.bandcamp.com on March 20. A vinyl LP release will follow in early summer. For more information, please visit twve.net, or email info@twve.net.

In exhibition at the time of the performance will be Blind Reproduction, which runs at Tribes Gallery from March 10 – April 15. For more information on Tribes Gallery and this exhibition, visit tribes.org or email info@tribes.org.
