Dead Mouse Day by Katherine Freedman

Dead Mouse Day It was a dead-mouse-in-the-pool kind of day.

At the grocery store,

the ding of the cashier ringing up groceries, ominous.

On the way to work,

the cars sped too fast for country roads.

The kind of day where just as the sun breaks through,

the clouds pass it again.

So when I came home, I was not surprised

to see the limpid body in the pool.

Who knew

the tiniest of corpses

could be the most tragic?

We must have been connected,

telepathically,

for I knew

it would be there waiting for me.
