Cherry Blossoms and the Delta Cotton

The mockingbird builds her nest in the tall oak tree

Singing her song, always so happy and free

Back and forth she flies never stopping to rest

It must be safe, it must be the best

She flies down and lands upon the ground

Aware of the danger she looks all around

Something new has happened and she looks to see

There is something at the bottom of her pretty oak tree

It feels cold on her feet so to safety she flies higher

Her world is now divided by strands of barbed wire

But on she works finding her little things

Building her nest she just sings and sings

On each side of the fence live two little girls

Each coming from different parts of the world

In the bright sunlight they so innocently play

They watch the bird as she works all day

One’s ancestors came from the land of the rising sun

The others had been slaves until their freedom was won

One left the bird cherry blossoms, such pretty little things

The other left cotton to warm the baby birds in the early spring

The mockingbird would sing to each girl a special song

Then away she would fly to work all day long

The girls never met but they shared a common bond

That they would take with them to the years beyond

Like the bird, one day away they flew

Each spring they remember what they once knew

That one may be bound in a place with barbed wire

But you can be free when one’s spirit soars higher and higher

Many springs have passed and time has helped heal the wrongs

Each still longs to hear their special little song

Once again they return to where they were once bound

They both lay something special upon the ground

In the Delta spring air a mockingbird sings

And inside their heart faith eternal springs

For this moment they have waited oh so long

To once again hear their own special little song

                       Deja Vu All Over Again

Further on down the road we thought hatred would surely cease

Now we see it's ugly head rise up again and give some an outlet of release

We see the shambles of a democracy and hear the voices of the past

They jokingly laugh as children cry and they snicker hoping their sadness will last

There is talk of bringing the children to our little part of the world yet once again

Taken from their parents and housed in such shameful demoralizing pens

History repeats itself without a sign that anyone learned a thing

Now once again the world sees that our freedom bell may never ring

It's deja vu all over again sending people into  camps so far away

The innocent lie victim to the powerful and mighty without a chance to have their say

They do it all in the name of necessity while denying justice and liberty for all

Yes it's deja vu all over again and like the civilizations before us we are destined for the fall

The helpless and the unwanted await their fate at the hands of a few

Why must their lives become a statistic with little that they can do

At the mercy of a cruel world, children are expendable, merely pawns

And history will not be kind to the battle lines that we allowed to be drawn

What will become of those little ones as their parents are sent back to their homeland

A generation that will stew in the fire of disbelief without a chance to understand

How can they be proud as they saw their parents denied the promise of the land of the free

A segment of society now castaway, their legacy falls on you and me.

It's deja vu all over again sending people into  camps so far away

The innocent lie victim to the powerful and mighty without a chance to have their say

They do it all in the name of necessity denying justice and liberty for all

Yes it's deja vu all over again and like the civilizations before us we are destined for the fall
